In her sun-drenched Welsh atelier, Mercedes Luis Fuentes is a quilt designer and maker who weaves together centuries of tradition with contemporary vision. Each handmade quilt embodies the principles of the Slow Stitch Movement. Mercedes immerses herself in the therapeutic rhythm of repetitive stitching, recognising its myriad benefits for emotional well-being. This brings both peace and purpose to her work.
Mercedes’s mastery lies in seamlessly blending time-honoured Welsh techniques and traditional quilt designs with modern innovation. Every piece tells a story through
meticulous detailing and thoughtfully chosen colours, whether bold and vibrant or classically subdued. Her quilts aren't just utilitarian designs focused on functionality over decoration – they're future heirlooms, crafted to age beautifully with each passing year and handed down through the generations.
Mercedes's path to quilting crossed storied halls, having worked in two Royal households in London and France. There, amid architectural splendour and geometric precision, she discovered her true calling. The practical beauty of traditional Welsh quilts captured her heart, inspiring a mission to both preserve and reinvent this cherished craft to which she adds her own distinctive voice. Mercedes has joined Wales's rich textile heritage, creating pieces that honour her Welsh roots while embracing the future.
